Mentorship
Mel Fleming has been my mentor and has changed my life in more ways than I can fully express. I do not compete in the horse world, nor do I have any desire to. My intention has always been simple and clear: to support my horse’s mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.
Mel’s understanding of the horse’s state of being—at a soul level—goes beyond anything I have encountered in other horsemanship methods. Her approach invites us to slow down and truly listen. In a world that often prioritises speed and results, her work can appear gentle or even slow by comparison. Yet the depth of change that unfolds within the horse is profound.
Through this work, horses begin to shift mentally, emotionally, and physically in ways that are lasting and authentic. When this foundation is then carried into Mel’s riding program, something remarkable happens. The horse learns true self-carriage, not through force, but through confidence and the ability to use their body in a biomechanically correct way. Riding begins to feel effortless, balanced, and deeply connected.
What surprised me most was how this work translated into my own body. Riding in motion under Mel’s guidance unlocked restrictions I didn’t know I was holding. Old patterns of tension softened, and in the process, physical pain began to ease. Healing was not something I set out to find—but it found me.
Mel’s programs open a completely different way for humans to be with horses. It is not about dominance or achievement, but about relationship, presence, and mutual regulation. In this space, healing occurs naturally—for both horse and human.
